Sister act! Bay Ridge and tiny Norway town are now bonded forever

A far-flung Norwegian province likes Brooklyn so much that it is recreating the look and feel of the borough during its post-War glory years with an extensive redesign of the center of the town — aptly dubbed Brooklyn Square. Read more

Grandpa Otto Carlsen - This is a photo of my Grandfather Otto Carlsen with King Olav. It was taken in October 1975 at the Seaman's Church in Brooklyn. He was born in Ragevik on the island of Tromoy off the coast of Arendal in 1883. In 1904 at the age of 21 he joined Norway's Merchant Marine and was priviledged to be on board the EIDSVOLD which escorted the ship that brought Norway's new King Haakon VII, Queen Maude and little Crown Prince Olav to Oslo from Denmark in 1905. For this he was honored personally by King Olav at the Seaman's Church during a celebration. My Grandfather lived to be 98.By: Lorraine Carlsen Knudson

Gumund Gunulfsen' search turned out to be successful.  He  was born in 1887 and came to USA in 1914 working as a mariner at least into the 1930s.  He brought his wife, Pauline and son to USA just after WW I and most likely brought them back to Kragero in 1921. The family lost contact during the 1930s.  He eventually settled in Bogalusa, LA.  He died in 1962.
